Holzorb

A game-changing solution

When you buy meat, fish or poultry (MFP) from the supermarket, you probably don’t pay much attention to the packaging. But did you know that the majority of protein trays are lined with absorbent pads that are not recyclable? These pads end up in landfills or incinerators, contributing to environmental pollution and waste.

That’s why Waddington Europe developed Holzorb, a game-changing solution that eliminates the need for absorbent pads. Holzorb is a thermoforming technology that uses clever grooves and pockets designed into the base of the tray to catch and store the liquid that drains from the meat. The liquid is then trapped inside the pockets by surface tension, reducing the risk of spilling or leaking.

Holzorb Tray

Holzorb trays are made from recycled PET (rPET), which can be recycled over and over again. By using rPET, Waddington Europe is supporting the circular economy, a system that aims to reduce waste and reuse resources. Consumers can now easily dispose of Holzorb trays in their kerbside bins, where they will be collected and recycled into new rPET products, keeping this valuable resource in the loop and out of landfill.

Holzorb trays are not only a good sustainable option but are also good for consumers. They are more hygienic and convenient than conventional trays. They keep the food fresh and reduce the risk of spills and messes, making them easier to handle and store.

In the last five years, Holzorb has prevented 190 tonnes of unnecessary padding from entering the waste stream. Holzorb is the future of MFP packaging. It is smart, sustainable, and simple.
